Tap Internal Spline Worn and how to Repair? All aspects of plumbing questions and answers, help, tips and information

My house was built in 1914 and has many original and older features. The bath and taps is shown in the photo. I want to retain the taps and faucet but the internal spline of the cold tap has worn so that it no longer grips. If I substitute the hot tap handle there is no problem with opening the valve. Any advice please about what I can do about the internal spine of the cold tap please?

It is a difficult job to do the repair you ask. It usually involves turning it down and fitting a splined sleeve over the top or a similar engineering solution. It would be easier to drill the head, thread and insert a grub screw.

All is not lost, if you want to do a bit of looking round you can replace the whole tap valve, stem and washer as one unit, it simply screws in and out. I have seen imperial ones on my travels so they are about. It looks something like the ones on this page.
