Tiling new plaster walls

by martyw » Wed Jun 20, 2012 2:07 pm

Hi

I have recently had to have the walls in my on suite re plastered due to the previoust tiles (put up by previous owner) leaking and made the plasterboard mush.

My questions are:-

Do i need to seal the new plaster to put on new tiles? if so whats the best way?

Also the new plaster has a small bow down the middle so when you put a straight edge on horizontaly the middle sticks out, its fine verticaly. So i am worried when i start the tiling that the tiles will not be uniformly level accross the wall, what should i do to make them level?

Thanks in advance
Marty

There is more detail in this project: https://www.diydoctor.org.uk/projects/ceramictiles.htm

But in summary you should use 1 part PVA and 4 parts adhesive to seal the new plaster to seal it before tiling.

This stuff's perfect for the job:

use a feather edge to fill in voids with adhesive or if your tiling design is for
the tiles to be set in a brick pattern you can adjust the adhesive thickness
for each tile as you work along the wall to avoid lipping.Once the first row
of tiles are straight you should be able to put aside the straight edge and
carry on by eye.
