Tiling on a chipboard floor.

by raffy1066 » Sun Aug 05, 2007 8:57 pm

:? Hi, I am about to start tiling my bathroom floor! I stay in a new built house that in the upper level has solid chipboard floors, Can I tile directly on it ?

It does'nt move and is in very good condition.

Can you please let me know as soon as possible so I can start.

Thanks Raffy.

No, dont tile directly over chipboard, if you ever had even small leak you will have trouble. Get some sort of floor water proofing stuff, just ask in your local DIY store its quite a choice these days. I used "cementboard" from Wickes. "Cementboard" reinforced my floor, stoped movement, ideal base to stick tiles on, not afraid of water, cheap. Be aware that it will raise your floor by 12.5mm

HI,

if the floor is solid you can tile straight onto it as long as you use the correct adhesive/grout and silicone. if you do this the water should not be able to penetrate the tiles.

cheers
