Tiling over chipboard or hardboard

Could use some DIY help/advice please - Can you tile directly on top of chipboard or hardboard?

I wouldn't think trying to tile over hardboard would be a good idea, but if you could explain exactly what you propose to do, I'm sure someone will be able to advise.
