I have made a doorway from my kitchen to my garage and it goes through a solid 9 inch supporting wall (this was the exterior wall before the garage was built on the side). This part of the garage will become a utility room, so I'd like to have a standard internal door here. I have of course put the appropriate 9 inch steel reinforced concrete lintle above it and I now need to line the door.
Is it possible to buy ready made door liners that are over 9 inches deep like you can for standard interior doors or will I have to make up my own? I'm assuming that I line this door in the same way that I would for a standard interior door through a partition wall? Or am I incorrect with this assumption. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. are you trying to bridge a cavity? if so, insert timbers into the cavity then fix your doorframe to that. alternatively clad first with 9 inch wide mdf before fixing a ready made door frame. or you could bead and plaster/render first (i assume that currently it is exposed brickwork?)

Hi Chris, thanks for your reply. There is no cavity in the wall. It is a 1927 built house, so is 9 inches solid all the way through (2 skins of brickwork). So I guess I would clad the doorway first with 9 inch mdf like you said.

However, it's the next part I'm not so sure about. Can I get a ready made door frame that is over 9 inches deep to protrude past each side of the wall? This would allow me to then plaster up to the frame on either side of the wall. I've only been able to find ready made door frames that are far less deep for stud partitions or single skin brick walls but not for a 9 inch deep wall. Do you know where I can find this... or would I have to make the frame myself? Thanks

If you want to cover all 9 inches with faced wood then you won't get a ready made door casing in this size.
You will be able to get 9 inch softwood that you can line out with. (e.g. 9" x 1") Then fix a batton to that to create your rebate for the door. If you don't like the idea of a small piece sticking out then just buy another 9"x1" lining and cut it down so in effect it will look like the door is recessed into a 9"x2" piece of wood
