A 'Purlin' runs horizontally through the centre of a common raftered roof to give added strength to a relatively long span of timber, a lightweight roof may not have needed one.
Your roof was probably initially laid with moderately light slates, the new roof is likely to have been re-done with something heavier in comparison.
If access is possible the job of shoring it up should be fairly simple, and quite necessary.
