Removing beading from Upvc window

by magicalwonders » Wed Sep 07, 2022 7:02 am

I need to remove and replace a bottom piece of beading on one of my windows.

The YouTube videos I've watched show that a long piece is removed first, making it easier to take out a short piece.

However, I'm not sure which way around to use the glazing knife! The knife has a bevel edge on one side. Does the bevel need to be facing the beading or the frame? Or does it even matter?

I hope someone can advise.

Hi magicalwonders,
Depends on how old you windows are.
If they are modern and the glazing beads are internal you should be able use a thick filler knife to prise out the middle.
If older, the glazing beads may be external but the same principle applies.
If even older still the windows will have an internal gasket which must be removed before you can push the DGU back and remove the beads.

Thanks for the assistance Stoneyboy.
The window is only a couple of years old so the bead is internal. The bottom bead was broken in one corner during installation. Too long a story why the installer has not taken care of it!

I have a glazing knife, which is supposed to be the tool for the job. However, it looks like a chisel with a bevel on one side. I don't know if it's important which way around to insert the knife.

I'm guessing flat side against the frame, but I don't know if it makes a difference. I just don't want to cause damage by using the tool incorrectly,

Hi magicalwonders,
That knife will be fine, you'll probably be better with the flat side to the beading, you may have to hammer the knife in (it will go in about 2mm) and then lever the bead up. Repeat this either side of the first position until the bead can be bent and lifted out, one end at a time.

Ok, Thanks. I'll give it a go. :)
