Vapor Barrier under Laminate Help, advice, information, answers and tips on all types of flooring from laminate and carpet to timber and vinyl

We are putting Laminate in our basement. The product is 12mm with an underpad directly attached to the Laminate. The man at Home Hardware said that if we were using a product with an underlay already on it, all we needed to lay down was a 6mm Poly and tape it to ensure moisture would not make its way through. Would this not move over time and you hear the plastic under the laminate? Is this just as good as underlay or should we go with the underlay made for laminate?

As you are putting the floor down in the basement definatly put down the poly,,make sure the poly is laying compltley flat ,when the floor is laid fit the skirtings or edging strips,this will help secure the floor,but just the weight of the floor will hold it in place,and you wont hear the poly

I aggree with aceone on this the underpad attached to your laminate in this case acts as an underlay so providing you protect it by using poly as vapour barrier you are good to go the poly should come up the wall slightly too not cut at floor level or you can get moisture penatrating at the edges
