Varnishing v Painting Bare Floorboards - Can You Paint onto Varnish if we Don't Like the Finish? Help, advice, information, answers and tips on all types of flooring from laminate and carpet to timber and vinyl

We have got our bedroom carpet up and so now have bare floorboards. They are in good condition other than needing a good sanding. We can't decide between just varnishing them or painting them. If we did varnish and didn't like how it turned out could we paint straight over that (obv once dried) without having to get the varnish sanded off?
