Volex RCB trips out Ask questions and find answers to many subjects relating to electrics and electrical work

Had new consumer unit fitted Volex split unit most circuits on non RCB side only ring mains on RCB the electrician has checked all wiring all OK neutrals to correct bars, no earths or shorts. However RCB trips about once a day yesterday opening oven door ( twice in a week) cooker electric not on RCB side and no electrics on door also switching lights on and off a few times will trip it.
He as said change RCB which is VR63 30ma as everything else OK but can anybody suggest anything else. Screwfix sell RCB Volex which is VR80 have I got the correct RCB or would an VR80 be the solution.

There is a good description of RCD’s on Wikipedia there are AC, A, and B types the main problem is harmonics the RCD works by measuring the difference between current in and out and if this exceeds 30ma it should trip but where EMC filters and switch mode power supplies are used the DC component and harmonics may trip one RCD but not affect another. There are some electronics within the trip, which change what will cause it to trip. Sometimes in spite the RCD passing all tests swapping it can cure the problem.
One of the problems is with the neutral to earth fault while no current is drawn it will not trip. But as the draw increases the neutral voltage will rise in respect of earth and cause the RCD to trip even when the current draw is not on the RCD protected side. You should have received a installation certificate which will include a “Schedule of test resultsâ€
