Water tank and very strange noise

by thequestioningkat » Sun Feb 05, 2023 1:33 pm

Hi all. I was wondering if anyone had any advice. We are getting a very strange noise coming from our water tank and other plumbing issues which may or may not be related:
- the water tank sounds like thundering water
- shortly follows a loud clunk from the airing cupboard and the water pump (not being used) activating for around twenty minutes
- our boiler (outside oil) is also spewing out brown black fumes and there is an associated oil smell, though this doesn't happen at the same time as the above. We have had a plumber out who has changed a nozzle so far (which obvs hasn't worked). Boiler is regularly serviced.

As I say the boiler, tank and airing cupboard could all be unrelated issues but any ideas would be great.

Attaching image of water tank ball cock as reading that could have something to do with the thundering noise.

Hi thequestioningkat,
You clearly have an issue with rust sludge in your heating system, the boiler should never be producing black flue gases. It is possible that boiling water is being generated in the boiler which may account for the noises you are hearing. Get the boiler firing correctly and then check for sludge build-up.
Regards S
