I'm planning to take a 300w PIR light off my outside house wall and re-positioning it on a tree trunk 25m down the garden. Cable run totals 30m. Two options for cable, buried in ground (favourite), or fixed to garden wall. What kind of cable would I need for these two options? Could a cable be simply buried in a shallow sand filled trench and covered with soil, or would it need more serious protection/conduit/sleeve? I'd be very grateful for any observations.

From what you say I would consider 1mm² SWA could be used. Buried to at least 0.6 meters in sand with tape or tiles above seems OK. At 30 meters that would give max of 5 amp with a volt drop of 6.6 volts. I think Part L limits you to 150 watt you will need to check on that as it will also come under Part P. Since it comes under Part P either you will need a registered electrician or the local authority building control either way they should confirm its all OK before you start.
