Wiring help with fluorescent tube light fittings

by Paul GB » Tue May 27, 2025 7:09 am

Trying to replace two old fluorescent tube light fittings in a cupboard that was originally a communal caretakers cupboard. The lights are permanently on - there is no switch in the cupboard or accessible elsewhere.

Taken one of the old lights off the ceiling. There are two cables coming out of the ceiling. The old connections are as in the photo. The new lights are pir controlled and have a manual on off switch built in. They only have an L. N and E connection.

What do I do with the wires currently connected to L1 and L2. There also appears to be a loop connection between L1 and L2.

Thanks for any help. Please keep it simple I struggle with understanding wiring.

The LED tube will work without touching the wiring with a wire wound ballast, but needs rewiring it an electronic ballast. Often they come with a fuse to replace the starter, both ends are wired in series so it does not matter which way around you fit the tube.
