External PIR light convert to 'Normal' external light

by HMSWoofDog » Tue Jun 08, 2021 7:01 pm

Hi, I hope you can help me. I know this has been posted many times before, i've tried to read all of them but from the ones i've read they differ slightly or the person was trying to do something i didn't understand. And to avoid any doubt in the situation i'd prefer to present my specific challenge - lets hope i give you guys enough info!

Current State
I have an external light with a PIR sensor which is connected to an internal light switch. We're not entirely sure how the light switch works - we were shown once but we've forgotten. Its not quite on/off but im sure you guys know!

Target State
We'd like to remove the existing PIR light and install a new light (which does not have a PIR sensor) and we'd like to change the wiring to support an on/off operation of the light at the switch.

I think I need to terminate one of the wires but i don't know which one - any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

This is the new light i'm hoping to install in place of the existing external PIR light:

This is the wiring of the inside light switch:

ps. not sure why the images are wonky - they are the right way round on my computer!

From what I can see you should connect your new light as follows.
Grey is Neutral
Black with brown sleeve is Live (It is actually switched live)
Yellow / green is Earth

The important thing is the brown, it is a permanent live. You must either isolate it with its own connector strip, or disconnect it at the light switch.

Obviously you do all of this with the mains turned off at the consumers unit.

As a side note, you pictures helped immensely, and they are on the side because you have not rotated them. I guess you turned your phone on its side to take them.

Thanks Mr White!

I have some electrical wire cable caps like these: https://www.amazon.co.uk/DollaTek-Electrical-Connection-Screw-Connector/dp/B07DJ3YHCV/ref=asc_df_B07DJ3YHCV/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=309912023430&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=345107729952356584&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1007259&hvtargid=pla-712445234591&psc=1 - will these be ok to secure the end of the unused brown cable? I will also disconnect it in the light switch to be safe.

Re. photos - its weird really - I took the photos in portrait (not landscape)

If you disconnect the brown at the switch end there is no need to worry too much about it at the other end, so long as it is kept out of the way.

The things you have linked to are commonly known as wirenuts. Wirenuts do not comply with UK wiring regulations and as such, should not be used.
