5 amp lamp dimming

by wanthotweather » Sun May 07, 2023 5:20 pm

Hello, is it possible to dim a light like this (which doesn’t have a dimmer switch) if I use a dimmable bulb and plug it into a 5 AMP plug with a dimmable light switch? Many thanks!

Make sure the dimmer switch you intend to use is LED lamp compatible (Not all dimmers can dim LED lamps) and as you said, make sure you buy a dimmable LED lamp. Then you are good to go.

You can use a "normal" 13A plug, but do change the fuse to a 3 amp fuse.

FYI the fuse is to protect the cable/flex NOT the light.

A dimming switch will only reduce the bulb output, where as a smart bulb you can dim and change the colour temperature and even the colour, so at under £10 for a smart bulb it is not worth using a dimming switch.

I did buy some years ago a couple of sets of socket adaptors with remote control, each set had two on/off and two dimming adaptors, the latter are today useless after we moved to LED.
