You shouldn't have to chase out when feeding a cable down a stud wall. The only exception is if you need to cross a noggin. Just chase and cut a groove which will be no mores than 3" long then just plaster over. Make sure it is directly above the lightswitch though, so in future everyone will know where the cable is.
Just cut a square hole and use a drywall box for the switch.
