Water droplets on the underside of my roof

by stevesgh » Wed Dec 19, 2007 6:40 pm

I have noticed recently. that we have waterdroplets on the the underside of my roof. The roof is a standard apex roof. We have lived here for over 15 years and this is the first time i have noticed it. I have checked the air bricks are clear, which they are. Has anyone else got any ideas?

Thanks

I've got exactly the same problem. Water collecting on the black felting beneath the roof tiles. It's on only one side of my roof (the one that doesn't get the sun) and dripping down into my boarded loft. I've only just moved in but my neighbour (other side of the semi) has the same problem and tells me that it's never happened before.

I think it might be a condensation problem since it's right across the whole side of the roof and not obviously in one specific place. We have had a lot of cold weather recently. I've noticed that the cold side of the roof doesn't have any vents.

I've spoken to a few roofing guys (without them seeing the roof). One suggested replacing the felt with a new (breathable?) material. The house is only 10 years old so I'm a bit suspicious of this. Another one suggested new roof vents. I'm going to pull the insulation a bit back from the eaves since it seems to be covering some of the ventilation there (although not a lot).

Would anyone kindly give me some advice? :) Is new roofing felt the answer, or more tile vents?

Many thanks.

It turned out that about 70% of the airbricks at the eves (soffit board area) were blocked. Clearing these, running a dehumidifier for a bit and the weather warming up seems to have solved the problem. Hopefully with the ventilation uncovered it won't come back.
