Can a gas fitting be used on a mains water supply? All aspects of plumbing questions and answers, help, tips and information

Hi there...

I'm thinking of having a friend of mine put in a second-hand bath for me. I only have a shower at the moment.

I wonder if a standard 15mm gas cut-off tap in brass could be used as the isolator valve for the cold water supply to the bath? If it's gass tight then presumable its also water tight?

No. First the construction is all wrong and second the pressure in a water pipe is far greater than in a gas pipe. Both add up to "it won't work".

I wonder why you would want to do this? For the sake of a couple of quid?

In any event if you have a gravity water system then the bath should be piped in 22mm NOT 15. You can get away with 15mm if you have a combi boiler as your system will be at mains pressure.

baths should be 22mm piping.

i suppose it could but for £1.50 why not just by a balofix valve from a plumbers merchant

why would you even want to? the correct fitting costs nothing and is probably gonna be a lot easier to install as its designed for the job. stop being so tight! spend 2 quid and do it properly ;)
