Taking down ceiling Information, help and advice on many architecture, self build and design problems and issues

Is taking down an existing ceiling a job for a builder or could we do it ourselves? If the former how much might this cost? If the later any advice how to go about it? thanks

Taking it down should not be too much of a problem Vicky but you need to be careful of any lights etc and their associated cabling. Its also a very dusty job so cover everything and take everything of value out of the room sometimes it comes down in big lumps. We are assuming its a plasterboard, or lath and plaster ceiling, if so choose a spot not close to any light fittings, and whack it with a hammer so there is a hammer head shaped hole in it. Start here and pull down little by little checking for cables and pipes as you go.
