Taking it down should not be too much of a problem Vicky but you need to be careful of any lights etc and their associated cabling. Its also a very dusty job so cover everything and take everything of value out of the room sometimes it comes down in big lumps. We are assuming its a plasterboard, or lath and plaster ceiling, if so choose a spot not close to any light fittings, and whack it with a hammer so there is a hammer head shaped hole in it. Start here and pull down little by little checking for cables and pipes as you go.
