Upstairs replacement light fitting

by Brett G » Sun Aug 17, 2008 8:36 pm

Help please!!

Live in a house that is 4 years old. I have just tried to replace the light fiiting on the stairs. I removed the old black ceiling rose which had 5 wires (3 red, 1 black & 1 earth) going into it and then 2 wires (brown & blue) going to the light.

I noted that 2 of the red wires were fitted into the socket marked loop, the other black & red are marked live & neutral.

The light fitting I have bought is a spot light strip, which meant I had to remove the ceiling rose. The new light has 4 terminals inside marked with earth, live, neutral & loop. I have connected the household wires to the terminals and the loop into the loop terminal. The light has 2 switches 1 at the top and 1 at the bottom of the stairs.
With the light wired as described it is permently switched on?? Whether I switch the upstairs or downstairs it doesn't go off?

Come on 5 wires how hard can it be????

Seems three posts the same look at http://www.ericmark.talktalk.net/lights.bmp and that may explain how it is wired normally two blacks feed the lamp one with red sleeve also look at projects section.
As you will see from image the two way lighting does not normally effect how the lamp is wired.
