Dont start until you are sure. See our projects on load bearing walls and forming openings in walls for full info on how to form an opening through a load bearing wall. A wall that is carrying joists IS a full load bearing wall as if its carryiong joists its also carrying the floor and everything that is on the floor. You are rerquired by law to notify the authorities if you are involved in structural alterations to your property and removing a load bearing wall is a structural alteration.
