Before you call the engineer you could try googling the model number. I did that when mine stated flashing an unknown error last winter. The general consensus seemed to be that it was a loose connection and sometimes a good wallop would fix it. A few wallops with the palm of my hand later and it's been working fine for another 12 months.
Of course a good wallop could also make things worse so it pays to be careful.
Depending on the cost, the value of machine and wether it's under guarantee/insured then it can sometime be cheaper to give up before you start with washing machine servicing. 3 - 4 hours work could easily add up to £200 quid which would buy you a brand new basic machine with a one year guarantee.
