Domestic fuel oil consumption about 4,000 litres per year!

by oilguzzler » Mon Dec 27, 2010 5:28 pm

With domestic fuel oil at astronomical prices, I have reviewed my annual oil consumption which, for the year Oct 09 to Oct 10, came to 3,900 litres. I can also calculate the difference between summer (aga only) and winter (aga plus heating) use. The 2-oven aga burns 40-45 litres per week, while I use about 100 liters/week when the heating is on as well.

The heating in on for 2 hours in the early morning and 6 hours in the evening.
The hot water is on the immersion
The house is 5 bed detached house - stone built with no cavity wall but with d/g and deep loft insultation (>200mm). The radiator load is about 13.6kW.

The boiler is a Camray 3, about 19 years old, model 70/90 and serviced annually, though overdue now . The burner is a Riello 40 Type 437 T55.

50-55 litres of oil per week, just for heating seems excessive... what do the experts think?

oilguzzler,
Your boiler is probably fitted with a 0.75 nozzle, if your boiler fired continuously 8 hrs per day and 7 days per week you would use about 220 litres of oil per week.
I would say your oil consumption is about right especially since your house is detached with no wall insulation.

Thanks Stoneyboy,
I will have to investigate ways I can reduce my consumption, including looking at intalling a more efficient boiler.

oilguzzler,
If you have a condensing oil boiler fitted this will cost you £3000+, this will save you 10-15% of your heating oil bill ie between £90 and £135 per year. Payback time between 20 to 30 years.
Get rid of the aga and buy a conventional electric range cooker (cost about £1000) this will save you about £1000 per year in oil costs and will payback in 1-2 years.

Hi, our house is 4 bed detached as opposed to 5 bed but the rest of the set up is almost identical to us, with hot water on immersion, no cavity walls, good loft insulation and electric cooker, boiler 10 years old and serviced annually. I would say that your oil consumption is in the same range as ourselves. Hope this helps..
