Re: Chicken house heating

Thank you very much for your kind reply ericmark. I like the idea of using the light bulbs. Do you think they'd work OK in low temperature outdoor, dry covered environment? I just wondered if the bulb might break if the outside of the bulb glass was at say 0 deg when it came on. I also like the idea...

Chicken house heating

I really don't know which forum to post this question in, but I need to start somewhere so here goes. Last year during that really cold weather in early December my chickens showed obvious signs of discomfort due to the low overnight temperatures. On three successive nights the temperature here in K...

Very many thanks ericmark for your kind reply. It does indeed answer my question very comprehensively. I don't pretend to understand fully all parts of your answer, but I've grasped enough to understand why it is essential that most systems have the earth and neutral connected. Again, many thanks.[/...

Are Earth and Neutral connected at the generating station?

I ask this question purely out of interest. When I look at wiring diagrams for houses, hotels etc., I can't help feeling that the relationship between the Earth and Neutral wiring surely means that these two must be connected together. Now, since they are certainly not connected together at the cons...

Rinsing after cleaning with sugar soap

I'm just about to refresh the paintwork in my lounge. It's brilliant white and I'm just going to give it another coat. The existing paintwork is still in good nick. A mate told me not to bother sanding it but just to give it a good wash down with a strong sugar soap solution. He reckons the sugar so...

Laying adhesive backed vinyl tiles on top of thermoplastic.

I have just bought some B&Q adhesive backed vinyl tiles to put on top of the existing thermoplastic ones in my kitchen. I've just noticed that on the tile box it says they are not to be put on top of asphalt tiles or thermoplastic ones. Can anyone tell me why? They don't seem to know at the bran...

Dear jimmy_one_ball, and ericmark, Many thanks to you both for taking the time to explain things so clearly. Goodness me, I never realised that such a seemingly simple job as putting up a security light needed such a careful approach. I contacted my county council offices for an application form to ...

Dear OnlineElectrician, Thank you for taking the time to send me a useful reply. You will see from my reply to ericmark that the first thing I may need to do is get permission from my county council, and I shall obtain the application forms tomorrow. Once permission is granted (I can't see any reaso...

Dear ericmark, thank you very much for your helpful reply. Are you saying that one has to apply for county council permission for ANY outside light over 150W? or can that permission be waived if a fully qualified electrical engineer does the installation? I will certainly take your advice and put th...

Why not turn off them last two existing rads just to check that you then do in fact get a flow through the new rad? If you dont, are you sure both valves at either end of the new rad are opening and not stuck closed? You could also see if you can turn up the circ pump to the next speed setting and s...

Correct type of cable for outdoor use.

Hi, I want to fix a 300w security light to the outside wall of my home. The fitting itself is fully weatherproof. But due to the construction of the walls, the final metre of cable to the light will need to be clipped to the outside wall exposed to the elements. What type of cable do I need? Would i...

PANEL RADIATORS

Hi, I expect you've had this question many times before but can you tell me please; What is the difference between a double panel single convector radiator, and a double panel double convector radiator? Is it something to do with the way the two panels are connected together? Thanks for any help you...

The amount of effort needed just to pull the machine out a little way was immense. So when I eventually got it right out and disconnected, I tilted it over and had a look underneath. There are two rollers fitted at the back of the machine but neither was in contact with the floor! The back of the ma...
