Many thanks for the replies. I have just been trying the defective site on IE and it seems to be working ok. So I will have to use IE in future. It's all a bit of a mystery.

Computer "freezing"

Can anyone possibly tell me why my computer freezes when I go onto a particular website. It is quite happy on just about any other site except for this one. I use Mozilla Firefox. Google "portsmouth.co.uk" I have never managed to go on it without the computer "freezing". any idea...

If it is an unheated external room, then it would be wise to install a small heater. This should be of a type that incorporates a frost stat. It is not sufficient just to lag the water pipes. If the room is unheated for long enough during a spell of below zero weather then the water pipe will eventu...

I suggest that even with only two lamps in series the light output will be very low. If you want to series up any more, then the lights will be very dim indeed. Why do you not just wire some up on the bench and see what is the effect on the light output. Bearing in mind that you are playing with 230...

Another alternative would be to see if there is someone in your area who runs one of those mixer lorries where they come and park outside your house and mix the load from the dry ingredients carried on the the lorry. Then you just barrow it to where you want it. The advantage of this is that they wi...

Roseberry. The problem is not the doughnut washer, although that does need replacing. It is a plastic moulding on the back of the pan which is called the accelerator. I have had a reply from Twyford so some progress is being made. Thanks for your interest.

Twyford CC toilet suite

I have just changed the syphon on a Twyford CC suite. It is about 10 yrs old. It is the type that has a plastic moulding which is screwed to the back of the pan. The cistern sits on this moulding. However the flush connector part of the moulding will not make a seal with the pan inlet. The rubber co...

Self levelling screed.

I was watching a TV building programme the other night, "Holmes on Homes" In the programme they used a self levelling screed on a floor. Now, I've used a so called self levelling screed on one of my floors. Except that it was not self levelling and required trowelling. The screed that was ...

I was doing some wiring in a house a couple of years ago and the owner trepanned holes in the ceiling wherever they were needed. He then stuck the circular cut-outs back in place with no-nails adhesive. With a bit of filling you could not tell where the holes had been. Of course, this only works if ...

The cable you have cut is a 2way lighting cable. No, you cannot use it to supply a double socket. It is not big enough and also the supply to it is only 5amp. You will have to find a different source to supply your socket outlet.

1) Be very wary about using one of the cheap screwdriver type testers. In any event they will not work through the insulation of the cable. 2) If you are genuinely just replacing like for like then what you suggest will work. However do NOT rely on the tester. Make sure the lighting circuit is switc...

Heat proof cable

Screwfix sell it, but not in small quantities. I have bought small lengths in the past but can't remember where. Why don't you keep a look out for an electricians van. They almost certainly would keep stocks. Failing that it might be worth while ringing someone from the yellow pages on the off chanc...

8mm compression fittings

Is it just me? I was moving a radiator supplied by 8mm pipe, and used some 8mm compression elbows to avoid having to use a soldering flame in a very confined space. However, they turned out to be completely useless. We tightened them up fully, used Fernox LS-X and ensured that the pipes were well se...
