Air vents in cavity walls

Hi there Cornish Biker. Has everyone ignored you since October 25th? I don't come on here very often, but I can perhaps help you with your query. Starting from scratch. Over the years cavity walls have been sealed, vented, sealed, and so on, but if you have no visible vents (air bricks) in the outsi...

Traditionally bricklayers left a raked out joint around a chimney or roof/wall abutment where lead flashing was to be installed. This left a gap of about 10mm high, some 20 - 25mm deep, and the lead flashing was tucked into these joints and lead wedges hammered in on top of the flashing to hold it i...

Picassa 2. with XP.

Picassa 2. I run Windows XP and I use Picassa 2 to import and handle my photos. Whilst it is easy to use, it will not allow you to import to an existing folder. The pop-up display which comes up early in the importing procedure asks for a folder title. It will not allow you to select an existing Pic...

Forget B&Q, go to a supplier of upvc products. The fascia to cover and fix to the existing is 9mm thick with a return on the bottom, with a depth to suit you. To strip off the old and replace with new UPVC you will need to use a different upvc product, which is thicker and will support itself. I...

Wow! As someone who did 5 years C & J apprenticeship and many years of studying to get an HNC, I am somewhat dismayed you can learn to be a roofer in half an hour. Too much TV I suspect. But to help you out I suggest you get hold of Redland's information on this Regent tile. It can only be used ...

You may have misunderstood. The options I have are to either stick with oil or move to gas. Still thinking.

Hi Sarah, Where do I start? Firstly, it is very unusual for a roof to leak at the ridge, because this is the highest point of the roof. Usually the felt, which is about 1m wide is placed centrally on the ridge and overlapping the lower felt. If the ridge IS leaking then this would however explain le...

All sounds a bit "doom and gloom" doesn't it. I built this house I live in which is out in the country. I have a lifetimes experience in the building industry, and I am competent in every trade except plastering. Pretty poor at that. I designed and installed my current heating system which...

The 2 rads which were giving trouble - are they on ground floor or first floor? Obviously I don't know your house, but it is pretty general practice for plumbers/engineers to run all the circuit pipework around the house inside the first floor void, taking short runs up to bedroom rads and longer dr...

DIY installation of a gas fired boiler.

Can someone please clarify.

If you install a gas fired boiler yourself (DIY), do you have to involve a corgi registered fitter at any stage. Is there any form of official completion certificate? Is the local authority involved?

What prompted you to start this? Was there a problem? I trust you know that there are (generally) 2 valves to each radiator, and (generally) the valve with the hand control knob on is (generally) the flow. The valve on the return is a similar valve with a plain cover which sometimes locks the square...

This is a bit obvious, but did you switch off all power to fit the new thermostat? Have you reset all the timings on the boiler timeswitch? If the boiler is "OFF", the new thermostst will have no effect,
