cap off gas fire

Hi, I have an old gas fire in dining room that I want to dispose of. Problem is there is no iso valve. Can I turn off gas, remove fire and install a valve and cap off, I am a mechanical engineer and very competant. Corgi man wants £80 to do it (15 minute job). Hi, just had a new gas fire and surround fitted. Got convinced by the installer that I needed a flue liner (not cheap). He removed my clay chimney pot and put a small Stainless steel cap on top. No heating without hot water

Can't get my heating to work independantly, have to have hot water on. Just bought a new hortsman programmer but no joy. Any advise please
