Hi, I'm firing a pottery kiln with propane, and have had problems with the regulator which fits on to the gas tank. It is a Nova Comet APZ 120R this has a tap with a locking nut to set the pressure and a dial with a needle to read it. Recommended pressure between 3 and 5 psi. The problem is that the...
Hi my property has an old concrete septic tank, the effluent runs off into a ditch at the edge of my 3 acre field. I need to install an underground pipe system in the field to properly deal with the runoff. can anyone advise me on working out how deep & how extensive this needs to be & anyth...
Thanks for your prompt reply. what is the reason for the 20mm gap between wall & board? why not five or ten mm? presumably the boards will still stick to the wall & its easier to get it flat. And any reason for blobs on wall not board? Its easier to do with the board flat on the floor. Vonsp...
The instructions for the knauff drylining adhesive I'm using for dot & dab advise using one 25 kilo bag for one and a half 8x4 plasterboards. This seems excessive, It seems like I'd have to coat the whole board rather than dot it to use that much. Can anyone advise: 1) how much to use per board?...
My builder has started putting up roof trusses, which have a raised tie. He's made the birdsmouth to seat them onto the wall plate 70mm deep into the 150mm trusses. I've read that the cut shouldn't be more than one third of the total depth. Does this mean the BCO will fail the roof, or will I get aw...
Hi all Because the planners want me to make my extension roof lower than the main building, I am short of window height on the upper floor. This means I want the top of the window as near to the eaves as possible. Is there a lintel designed for this application, or how can I arrange it to get the ma...
Hi everyone I'm building a two storey extension. The block work is just approaching roof level & so I need some more info about roofing. can anyone answer the following? Some drawings I've seen show a double wall plate. Is this preferable & why? Thanks in advance for your trouble Vonspritz
I'm self building a two storey extension, the block work is nearly to first floor level. What are the pros & cons for either building the floor joists into the internal skin of the wall, or taking the wall up flat & using hangers?
All advice & comments appreciated.

Thanks for your answer, but the main point of my question is, when I get to roof level, about 5 metres, say, is there a maximum amount that the wall can be out of true and be still viable, or within acceptable limits?
Hi all I'm self building a two storey extension using blocks. My question is this: how vertical is vertical? the blocks vary in size, making it difficult to be exact. I can get a true vertical by working against a batten when coming off the existing wall, but the free standing end is more tricky. Is...
Hi I'm using trench blocks in a stepped foundation. I now find that I need to raise the level of the higher step by 50mm so that I can run the blocks through at the right level. should I use mortar or a concrete mix? Across the whole foundation or just the width of the blocks? Your advice always gra...
Hi all I'm a bit baffled about the use of trenchblocks (laid flat on the footings) versus two skins filled with a weak mix concrete. Most illustrations show two skins, why not just take the trenchblocks to one block below ground level? Hope this question is clear as it's hard to explain without a di...
Hi
I'm putting in a trenchfill foundation, and as the ground slopes, I have to put steps in. can anyone explain how to fix the boards in place to make the steps?
Thanks

All the wood glues I can find say that they start to set in five mins. I'm assembling a small flight of stairs and its going to take more like fifteen or twenty- by the time I've coated all the wedges etc & got it all together. does it matter if it's started to set? What's the alternative? Thank...
I'm taking out flooring and cutting through joists to fit a quarter landing staircase in the corner of a room. The free ends of the cut joists will be supported by cross pieces to the other joists. Does the 1st floor also need to be supported by a pillar at the inside corner of the staircase? Regard...
