Re: Cable colours and extending upstairs ring main

To do this properly & safely a electrician would need to give you advice first, normally if the cables run under the floorboards, you would remove a cable from the 2 sockets you need to run the ring between, then run a cable from the existing socket to the new sockets & back into the other e...

Re: Cable colours and extending upstairs ring main

The new harmonised cable colours (brown live & blue neutral) were brought in on 2004, most older properties still have the old red & black, however, these old cables are perfectly ok to stay there until the need to rewire the whole property. So in your case, the brown live will connect to th...

Re: connectivity test

The test should be a Insulation resistance (IR) on the cable & the reading should be a minimum of 25 M Ω for equipment up to 250v.
If you don’t know how to use or read electrical test equipment, get a competent person who does.

Re: MCB keeps tripping in new 10 way Schneider unit

Swap the rings over to see if the fault moves to a different circuit.
Then if it has, you have an over sensitive MCB.
So you can change it

Re: Replacing old Alarms With Interconnected Smoke Alarms

I take it you want to replace your mains smoke alarms with wireless interconnected alarms. I presume they will be battery powered, so you will have to find out where your first alarm is fed from, probably a light fitting near by, it will have to be disconnected (live & neutral & earth)& ...

Re: Extractor fan permanently on suddenly

I would swap over the 2 lives, looks like the permanent live is in the switch live. Be careful you don’t move the neutral wire. There should be a triple pole isolation switch outside the bathroom, normally above the door. Also there should be a timer switch inside the fan to alter the run on time af...

Re: Replacing a 2 gang 2 way with a 3 gang switch

You will need to get a Neutral to the outside light, as there is probably not one in the switch.
Will need to run a cable from a light fitting in the house to the outside light, don't know how your going to do it without making a mess.
Then connect the blue to blue.

Re: Wiring up an outside light socket, one brown wire one blue wire

Hi Looks like this has been wired with a permanent live & a switch live, (Brown wire x2) some security lights have the option for this. It can then be operated by the switch indoors or it will work with the sensor even if the switch inside has been turned off. you will need some test equipment t...

Re: Fuse blew when bypassing dimmer for lamp

OMG.! That is the 12 volt transformer that you have bypasses, these lamps are designed for 12v & you put 230V through them.
So the best thing to do is, throw away the light & buy a new one.

You could of killed your self or started a fire !!

Re: Wiring up a wall light with a pull switch only basic instructions

Join one of the switch black wires to the light black wire in a connector block.
Then the 2 cables left, the white neutral & the other black switch wire, connect these to the live & neutral cables in the wall.

Re: Is my light switch ready for 3-wire?

It looks like a neutral, generally the neutral in a switch is not connected to anything, but it will need testing first.
The bottom red looks like the live feed.
It will need testing with a meter, as it could go bang if you short it out
