Re: Wicking membrane?

Thanks. That isn’t how it is. I’ve got battens butting up and that blue menbrane was on top of the rafter lead, although trimmed to the slate line. I’ve pushed the membrane futher under spares, and have ordered some expanding weather tape to create the same as what you say being mortared either side...

Wicking membrane?

Hi, our bedroom ceiling has been starting to develop an issue in that it’s damp below the valley rafters (although actually was dripping a couple of months ago, but I found the gutter the valley was draining into was overflowing at the wrong end!, and I assumed back into the wall - but that all feel...

Worcester combi - digitat not talking

Hello, could anyone advise please. I think I’ve worked out why either rads are either not coming on, or it’s really hot - the thermostat doesn’t seem to be talking to boiler properly. I’ve got new alkaline batteries in the digitstat and the boiler is flashing ch and the radio symbol too, if I turn t...

Vent to highway/pavement

Hi, I'm thinking about installing a Single room heat recovery vent in our basement. I've cured the damp issues with cork insulation and breathable plasters etc, but I need a new vent solution as my existing window vent (just extractor on a timer) will go when we replace the window this week. So we w...

Re: quickbase foundation systems

Hi, I can't remember why, but we had to go for piled foundation due to I think clay heave and neighbours property below our ground level. However when they came to pile we hit bedrock within 1.5 metres and so we had to go for traditional trench but 1.5 - 2m deep - so a LOT of soil came out! I ended ...

Relative Humidity Data Logging for Damp Basement

Hi I bought a USB Temperature Relative Humidity data logger devices a few weeks ago. I'm using it to measure RH in our basement (terraced party walls both sides, retaining wall to rear, front opens to street level) - we have removed some plasterboard boxing in and plastic sheet "damp solution&q...

Using Convereted Basement as a Utility Room and Drying Room

Hi, I hope I'm posting in the right topic, please let me know if I'd be better moving it. We are about to embark on doing a DIY tanking of our damp basement (rear wall below ground), we will use a membrane system and sump pump. Once that is complete, we'd like to partition the room, and use the end ...

Split Level Floor for Headroom and Stairwell - Next Stage Project

Hello again. My next project stage is to modify our basement and the room above it - I'll call that a study for ease, however it will be a room for going in and typing stuff like this! Eventually I need to raise the height of the basement door to make it a proper front door, but internally as the ba...

2 course hollow block - reinforcement and fill needed?

Hi, I've built a garden wall out of 2 courses of hollow 9" blocks with drain holes, on a foundation course of 4" 7n blocks on their side. Rightly or wrongly! The wall zig zags at right angles with the longest straight run being 2m. It retains soil but only about 2m at widest point as neigh...

Re: Retaining Walls Before Or On Top Of Patio Slab

Quick questions The idea of the deck in the middle of the slate patio is to provide drainage for the surrounding slate via gravel pit under it, draining to the main soak away, is the mortar for the bed ok right up to deck beams/joists or do I need to have a small gravel channel to allow water drain ...

Re: Retaining Walls Before Or On Top Of Patio Slab

Sorry for the delay, the forum only seems to notify me on first reply.

So would it be a 1 cement to 4 ballast mix? And how much working time do I have, ie what happens if I leave a few days between areas? Or is cracking not a problem as it will be between slates if anywhere?

Ta Matt
