Pipes can be sealed with expanding polyurethane foam. A decorative collar can be fitted around pipes or the pipes can be morterd up.
Depends what material they pass through.

A metal detector works wonders. Better if the lights are switched on whilst detecting.
It would be very unusual to have buried the transformer.

What you descibe sounds like crimped connections. Are there three clear plastic squares with a circle on them.
