Thinner insulation needed. What type?

My loft conversion has 70mm celotex fzr4000 insulation over my rafters unfortunatly as it is we appear to have only 40mm of space available for insulation. The BC doesnt appear to be to bothered unless its in the region of 100mm by the minimium height (stairs). I would like to try and achieve the mi...

painting new roughcast

I just finished the next stage of my garden wall {mini project while waiting my loft BW} My mrs wanted roughcast/wetcast to the wall to match the house. I had never wet cast before but got there in the end. The start is a bit lumpy but sure it wont be noticable once painted. I obviously would like t...

I would suggest doing it yourself seeing as its only a garage. You want to hit n miss. Dig a section (size depending on building materials & condition) miss two sections and dig the other. Flood with concrete then after setting do section 2,s followed by the third sections. Does that make sense?...

I was a bit worried how to go about this with our new baby in the house. I didnt want joists etc going through the house. Making a temp hole in the roof is possible as its not difficult to put back as you still have the materials. I have velux windows to be fitted so decided to fit them first and ha...

roof vents

I have on the drawings a continous 25mm gap vent to provide at my soffits for ventilation to my loft conversion. Now I looked at putting one of those circular vents between each rafter(450mm c/c) but thats not nearly enough area. If I look around at roofs in the area no one has as many roof vents as...

Structural engineer or design certificate.

I have been getting some prices for doing building warrant drawings for a loft conversion. I have had a price and they say they can organise a S.engineer or a quicker method would be to have a design certificate from an engineering company they work with. Anyone out there that can explain this desig...

Is the porch insulated ? Flat roof ? It could just be because of the difference between inside and outside temperature htg Its not open flue and the flue going outside does steam away but inside it still feels like its very humid but no obvious sign of release. Before the porch was just single skin...

Double up rafters for roof windows

I want to replace my old cast iron sky lights with velux windows but will involve cutting the already rotten (localised) rafters. I will double up both rafters on either side to compensate for the one cut out in the middle. Does anyone know if its ok to use the correct grade timber fixed onto the ex...

If he has the concrete coming in ready mixed (By the sounds of it probably) meet the delivery and say you want a copy of the docket to ensure you have the correct mix and not some cheap 20N mix. Check if their using mesh rebar,(If designed for) that its in and they havent used a wee offcut at the st...

Just ask for a water bottle when you hire a stihl saw any hire shop should have them. Make sure its pumping water before you leave. Try to create a polythene bubble round the area as it will create slurry and there will be a chance of it spraying. This is pretty much standard practice in the constru...

About ten years ago I bought a ground floor flat. The rear of the property was road level on the first floor so to speak and my back bedroom wall was part of a basement. It was very damp when I bought it (got it cheap for this) Anyway I dried out the wall with heating and dehumidifier. I cleaned and...

High humidity with combi boiler.

I recently finished building a 4mx3m porch after the original small 2 x 1 one was constantly running with damp due to poor build. It now looks like the comi boiler we have in there produces some amount of moisture and obviously was a big factor in the original porch being so damp. The windows consta...

Energy efficiency calculations for loft conversion.

I plan to do a simple loft conversion. Its a 50,s semi detached bungalow and structure wise I dont see a problem but I think I will need energy efficiency calcs for our local council (North Ayrshire, Scotland). :? Does anyone on here have any good links to learning how to go about these. I had hoped...
