Adam1985 You have red and black cables installed before 2004/5 , then our colours were changed ( harmonisation ) to the current colours of brown and blue. As Mr white states, a connection diagram is required , to make the correct connections.
Mixing up Polarity ( live and neutral connections ) can be dangerous, and can also damage the item you are attempting to operate.
As always if there is any doubt, you should get in an electrician.

Just to add to Mr White s Advice , , you would make that the mains is isolated before you use your multimeter on omhs/continuity scales.

For the consumer unit you have specified , the 2.5 would be too small.
As already stated , this is notifiable works.
I Assume you have an Electrician with you who can test , inspect and certify the work.
