Sagging floor joist

Hi all, I have a joist in my living room (near patio doors) that flexes by a quite a few mm when i press hard with my foot (the floor creaks when I walk on this bit). I've checked the joist and it doesnt appear to be any rot. Can I do as someone suggested and put a small paving flag down below the j...

How long before I can mist coat?

Hi all, I have had a lounge room taken back to the brick and replastered. Two coats of sand and cement on walls followd by skim coat. All walls appear dry (light pink colour) and the ceiling (was boarded over and skimmed) has been mist coated already. How long should I leave it before mist coating t...

sealing with siliconaround the bath

I have water leaking around the edge of the bath where the tiles meet the edge of the bath. I have removed the old silicon and the grout (between the tiles and the bath edge) came away with it. Do I need to replace this grout before filling the bath with water and resealing with silicon? Thanks Kevin

Filling in large holes in brickwork

Hi there, I have just noticed a very small damp patch on the floor just inside a set of upvc French doors. On looking outside I noticed the upvc trim bead has come away from the external reveal and water has ingressed inside. I also noticed when pulling the trim further away very large gaps ( 2-3 in...

Thanks for the reply. The radiator dial on boiler is set to max. It's just the trv's hissing prior to them shutting off when the required room temp is reached, the boiler itself is very quiet. My trv's are Pegler bulldog and are bi-directional I think (two arrows on the stem?) The Boiler is a Worces...

Noisy central heating

Our central heating system is just over 1 year old. When the heating has been on for some time the radiator valves make a hissing noise (like water coming to the boil in a kettle.) If I turn down the TRV the noise stops but appears again if I turn them back up. How can I fix this? It happens on seve...

Thanks for responding. The plaster was most certainly not primed first. I don't remember the plasterer or tiler doing either. The shower is a combi fed mixer shower unit pumping at mains pressure only (11 L/min - I tested this with a bucket/stopwatch) there is no shower pump I haven't got a clue whi...
If the wall behind the tiles is plasterboard, and water has been penetrating then this will be useless. you need something waterproof behind the tiles
The wal behind is solid brick, skimmed with bonding plaster I think, but not polished to allow for a better key. I a...

Bathroom tiles falling off

hi there, I have noticed that an area of tiles (3ft wide by 5 ft high) on my bathroom wall above the bath are "pushing." The area affected is exactly where the water from the shower hits the wall. Obviously water has penetrated the grout and loosened them over the 4 years or so that they h...

Thanks for that. I got their guys who fitted it out and they removed the glass and pushed the frame forward. They had screwed through the window sill into the wooden frame but there was a drill hole without a screw. Water was getting onto the top of the cill and draining through the hole into the in...

Leaking upvc window cill?

I have had new UPVC double glazing installed in our house (18 months ago) The bedroom window has leaked and the plasterboard underneath the window has soaked up water and blown away from the wall during the heavy rains. The window is a upvc bay window which sits on a timber frame hollow bay construc...
