Re: door lining/casing

Well it's been a while that this thread has been running! I think that I was justified in my original comment that even professional chippies and joiners don't seem to be able to agree on which is which! Go into one shop and ask for a lining, you'll get a lining. Go into another and ask for a frame,...

i wouldn't just use plasterboard fixings on the plasterboard wall, your shelf is likely to come down - try and pick up a stud or put in a noggin.

it is quite a wide span so no, the shelves will not be as solid as the would be if supported by brackets beneath.

dob & dab would be my preferred choice. the polystyrene backed board will give plenty of thermal insulation given it's intended purpose, you'll lose a heck of a lot more heat through the patio doors, even if they are double glazed.

what do you mean by wall plate? in building terms it has a very different meaning to the context that you are currently using.

doesn't sound like you used a gloss last time if it had a satin finish - and if you could wash the brushes in water it must've been a water based satinwood perhaps? anyway, crucial to the longevity of the whiteness is the prepwork. sand down well then clean up and use a decent quality primer (on any...

it could be possible, but you'd need some wide battens to give the necessary rigidity and strength. what type of wall are you fixing into and what type of fixings do you intent to use? and presumably MDF for the shelving? I'd use a cladded batten along the front of the shelves as well (recessed a li...

forstner bits are quite cheap and easily obtained, so why not use concealed hinges? many advantages include that fact that they are, er, concealed and they are also very adjustable so you can fine tune the fit. for a diy job using any other type of hinge is a bit of a one shot deal, little or no cha...

Tripping an MCB to isolate a circuit.

Hi, I am trying to isolate a circuit to move a socket in a floorbox. The MCBs at the consumer unit are labelled up but there are I have a choice of four to choose from for the circuit I need to isolate. Now of course one could ordinarily just flick all switches one by one until I hit the right one a...

the paint should come off the cupboards quite easily with some warm water and a gentle scrub. i'm assuming that your cupboards are finished in melamine? in which case you will need to give them all a good sand prior to priming. you can buy paints designed for this purpose but in my experience you ar...

you say " The doors don't need priming as i'm painting them with satinwood..." - does not mean that they shouldn't be primed. i'd at least sand the doors and give them a good solvent-based undercoat first. then knock back the undercoat with some fine finish sandpaper. some pointers to give...

almost certainly is the pump - try bleeding it first and see if this does the trick. if you no longer have the manual for your pump then see if you can find it online, some manufacturers have downloadable manuals. if it's been running for a while with air in it then you may have burnt it out - might...

given the weight and size of the area to be tiled i'd be inclined to replace with fresh plasterboard. you don't necessarily have to remove the existing plasterboard, you could locate the joists and overboard. just make sure that you use drywall screws of sufficient length to hit the joists. at least...
