Hi billobach, With older systems, TT mainly, a 100mA RCD would be installed between meter and CU. In the event of a earth fault in the installation it would trip. The down side would be total darkness till you got to your CU to reset it. As you say you have a test button (which only tells you the th...

Hi, Have you gone junc box, switch and light or junc box light and then switch? 1. Run cable from junc box to SW, put the incomming L in common and out going L to L1. Join the two Ns together in a block. The cable to the light goes L to light L (not loop) and N goes to light N. 2. Run cable from jun...

Hi alan, You will get 230-240V at a 'light fitting' as there (normally) isn't a N in a switch. However, if in the switch there is a LNE in and LNE out with the two Ns joined in a block and the two Ls in common and L1 then this tells me that a light fitting is down stream and at the end of that switc...

Hi Karl, no such thing as a silly question. I know!! If you are going for a split load CU you want two RCDs for each side. EG: All your down stairs circuits and lights up, and all your upstairs circuits with lights down. 30mA RCD at the start of both splits. Get a CU that is pre wired, saves a lot o...

wardy,

Yes thats fine as long as it is connected via a fused connecting unit. Update CU info to that effect for future persons reference. LABC should be notified as its a kitchen mind.

billobach,

You have made things better of course if I read you right. 16mm2 E conductor from MET to service head all good. Obviously its 10mm2 from water and gas and oil and the like to MET or E block, 16mm2 from MET to E block and onto armour as per regs.

Regards

Fair play,

We all live and learn. On a refresher course I saw hardened REAL sparks struggle with two way and intermediate switching. We all keep learning.

Thanks again ericmark.

Hi ericmark, Thanks for the time and effort you put into your reply. I really appreciate it. I fully get what you are saying and I feel a bit of a numpty now. Think I may have over reacted to it all. I had completed all dead tests some time ago and that was all good. I went back to the house this mo...

Granny Annexe (again)

Hi all, Sorry to bother you again but I have an inquiry to make and confirm that I am correct in my advise I have given. This is what I wrote last night but lost it in the sending. I have just completed a full installation to a new build, in the form of a granny annexe. The main house is a 5 bed lar...

Hi, After isolating supply to light at CU, remove switch, up and down if on a two way. Don't remove any wires from switch/switches. Check that all wires are tight and not loose. If thats ok try light fitting too. It sounds like you have a loose wire. PS after removing light and/or switches, test to ...

Granny Annexe

Hi all, Only basics now i'm afraid. Main house max demand 210a with diversity. Granny annexe 115a with diversity. I recommended extra phase to supply annexe as it will be ran as a new house by mother-in-law. Not happy with that, they had second opinion and now have split tails with sub CU supplying ...

Light

Hi, If your new light is a PIR, then on it, you should find some small dials. One for LUX(how dark you want it to be before it comes on) and or sensativity. Some incorperate a time length too. Try adjusting them. You will hear a small click when it comes on even if the bulb has gone. Regards Jack

Thanks eric,

Feel alot better about it now. There is a large window with plenty of street lighting and the glass above the doors, as yours.

Many thanks
Take care

Shower and light circuits under one RCD

Hi, I have just installed a new electric shower circuit and light circuit to a bathroom. No space in existing CU so installed extra CU for shower. As per regs new circuits to bathrooms must be on rcds. So I have 63A 30ma main switch, 40A mcb for shower and 6 for light, both circuits under the rcd co...
