Timber Framed Garden Building Including Bed, Shower and Toilet

I am planning to build a timber framed detached building which will be a workshop/garden room including a bed/shower/toilet for occasional visitors. I have been told that I will need B Regs approval for the structure. I was planning to construct using 100x50 studs with shiplap on the outside and t&a...

Loft Conversion and Engineer Queries about Foundations

I'm considering a loft conversion and have engaged an engineer to look at aspects. There are the usual things to consider - but the engineer is making quite a fuss about the unknown facts about the foundations of the internal walls which will take some of the extra loading. The disruption of making ...

Re: DPC Bridged Causing Damp Issues

It sounds like you are not suggesting a horizontal dpc in the existing wall but just tanking between the floor and the wall at the bottom??

Re: DPC Bridged Causing Damp Issues

There is no evidence of damp on the concrete kitchen floor - although it has plastic tiles which may well be glued with bitumen creating a dpm. The damp is showing on either side of the 9 inch wall between kitchen and dining room which are now at the same level. Course - without xray eyes I cant be ...

Re: Block up external doorway

Seems the thinnest drytherm is 50mm - meaning there would be no cavity with 75 and 100mm blocks - as the total width would roughly add up to the thickness of the wall. I suggested stud on the inner skin as it would probably be quicker to put up and the insulation could be put between the studs and t...

Re: DPC Bridged Causing Damp Issues

Thanks. . . Actually thinking about the whole problem again - If it had been built correctly in the first place the wall dpc would have connected with the dpm of the old floor and it wouldnt matter how much concrete was added to raise the floor - it should be damp free. So something doesnt make sens...

Block up external doorway

I have an external doorway in a pebble-dashed 9 inch brick wall which I would like to fill in. Would I have to comply with current insulation regulations for this short piece of wall or can I just fill in with 9 inch blocks and plaster and render afterwards??

Thanks. . .

DPC Bridged Causing Damp Issues

I recently purchased a property which appeared to have some puzzling damp on the 9inch wall between the dining room and kitchen. I have been advised by a neighbour that the previous owner removed the step down into the kitchen by raised the existing kitchen concrete floor to the dining level by fill...
