Re: How to fill holes in a ceiling

The best way is to cut out square between the joists, put a couple of noggins in as support and cut a square piece of board to fit. You can then skim it over to get a perfectly level finish.

Re: Colour scheme advice

You should get a colour wheel to help you pick the colours. With green and brown I think just white is the best option as it is very hard to get a triad scheme to work with those colours. It would be better if everything was the same shade of green - not all greens go together! Search Google for col...

Re: Bizarre problem with toilet

is there an isolation valve from the mains supply to the toilet? Has it been connected properly? Follow the pipe from the cistern back, you should be able to find the problem.

Re: What is underneath the old fireplace!?

If there was a concrete base there before, then it should easily be able to support the leveling compound. It should only need a thin layer, which won't add much weight. It will be less heavy than a person standing there, or a large piece of furniture, so it shouldn't affect the flat below.

Re: Rules for studs

You need to treat them more or less the same as you would floor joists. Any notches will affect the structural strength of the timber. They may not be load bearing but they will form part of the structure. Usually I would drill centrally at about 200mm from the base. This should be about the right h...

Re: EnSuite in an old Victorian house

Fitting the bathroom is not going to be very expensive, but running the pipework can be, depending on how far away the drainage and water supply are. The most difficult part is going to be connecting onto the soil pipe. There needs to be a fall on the pipe, and it may need to be run through the flat...

Sorry, but there isn't an easy way to remove plaster. You may ned up having to take the ceiling down completely and reboard it.

Re: LOFT CONVERSION - CEILING TO FLOOR CRACKS

A loft conversion shouldn't have caused these cracks. You could check if they had building control approval. If they did, then the building inspector would have checked the work to ensure it was done correctly. Staircases are not normally built in to walls, they are supported against the floor. This...

Re: Preventing Vermin - Loft Space

It is almost impossible to keep them out when they get in. Check the edges of the roof for any openings and block them up. If the roof space has insulation it will probably be ventilated. If you block the vents it will cause a lot of problems, so be careful if you do try to block all openings. Mice ...

Re: Fire Regulations For Exposed Timber Joists In Ceiling

It depends on how much of the timber is exposed and how deep the joists are. Rockwool between the joists will protect the sides. Also how high is are the flats. If you just need 30mins of protection you probably won't need any additional protection.

Re: Damp On Stairs From Cellar Not Touching External Wall - How To Treat

If the cellar has been tanked and is dry, then the stairs should be okay. I would guess the damp was caused by a leak somewhere. Obviously this is just a guess, without actually visiting the house I can't be sure.

Re: Web Sites and Forced Ways to Write

It is quite cheap to buy web hosting and they work so much better than free sites. You will always struggle to get a free site hosted. I would recommend one.com, they only charge about £10 for the first year, and you get a free domain. Then install Wordpress. It is the easiest way to build a website...
