Re: How Easy are Trend Tenon Jigs to use

Not the easiest to get your head around. Set up needs to be very precise and specific cutters used. I may have given up too early as a I'm sure a wide range of joints could be achieved. I'm fortunate enough to have the use of a festool domino machine, which is by far the easiest way to produce morti...

Re: Fixing Ikea Lack Shelves that will be Holding Weight to Plasterboard Wall?

If you can locate the studs it would be easier to get a good fixing, if not have a look at gripitfixings.co.uk., they offer plasterboard fixings that can carry 90 kg per fixing.

Re: Fixing a TV Bracket for 32 Inch TV to a Breeze Block Wall

Most brackets included a few decent fixings, but if in doubt do a test drill in a spot that won't be visible. Drill an 7mm hole 2 1/2" deep. Pop a brown plug in and a 2 1/2" no10 pan head screw, leave a bit of the screw sticking out, give it a tug with the claw hammer and see how it fares.

Re: Screwing into Floor Joists from Below to Construct Shelving in Basement

Sounds fine to me, if you're using timber uprights , put a small piece of damp proof course or thick plastic underneath them. The floor probably has no damp proof course and the uprights may perish quickly.

Re: Unrendered Breeze Blocks and Cracks Appearing on Internal Walls?

Check the thickness of the walls to see if there is a cavity, if not get it externally insulated and rendered in something like K1. Also does the extension have a flat or pitched roof? Does it have a decent overhang? Water may be getting in from above. If the outer skin is breeze block, I'd have it ...

Re: Bathroom sink overflow causing leak underneath when plug in

There may be a casting hole not sealed up or the basin waste may need removing and refitting with a bit of plumbers mate putty on the gasket before tightening.

Re: Makita mitre saw not working

Check the motor brushes, ( large slotted plastic screw either side of motor housing). Or a simple as it sounds, cut off the moulded plug and replace with a new one. Sometimes the neutral wire can bake and break inside the plug housing. Failing that the safety button or main switch may be broken. The...

Re: Recommendation for electric Jigsaw

If you can afford one, buy a festool body grip psb 300 or similar. I've had one for seven years and its still as good as day one, even a used one from eBay would be a good buy. Brand new you get 3years warranty and in the event of theft, you only pay £100 pounds for a replacement. Promise you won't ...

Re: Gurgling Sinks in Main Bathroom and En-Suite in 2000 Redrow Property

It's due to the length of the pipe work or speed at which the water goes through the trap, it can cause syphoning. The water is being sucked out of the trap and it gurgles, like an upturned pop bottle, you can install an 40mm air admittance valve near the trap. If there is a 90 degree bend after the...

Re: Kitchen Unit Wall Fixing Heights for Drylining Battens

Standard worktop height is 900mm, so about 850mm above finished floor level should be ok. As for wall units, if you leave the usual 450mm for tiling and your wall units are 720mm high, then mark approx 75mm below the top line for the centre of a batten.(hope that makes sense!) This should be ok for ...

Might be a bit pricey but, in a similar situation I've had a double glazed unit made with a hole formed in it for a fan that is specifically for that location.
Provides ventilation and maintains security/privacy.

Re: Fitting Towel Rail Heater in Place of Radiator

You can buy and earth clamp from any electrical wholesaler, the earth wire can be attached, usually by a nut/ bolt, then the thin metal strap can be passed around the copper pipe below the valve and tightened up.
If you have a combi boiler you may see a few of them connected up with earthing wires.
