Re: Integrated Fridge Ventilation in Small Kitchen

Ventilation is important for efficient running of the fridge. Also poor ventilation increases the risk of a fridge overheating and catching fire.
First though, are you intending to stand the fridge on the washing machine? Beware of vibration.

Re: Emulsion Over Oil Based Paint on Wood Nightmare!

Prime any bare wood preferably with an oil based paint to minimise grain lifting. Then coat everything with a high adhesion water based primer/undercoat. I would be using water based satin or eggshell as it dries much quicker enabling multiple coats in a day plus you won't stink the house out or be ...

Re: Issues With Flue From Neighbouring Extension

There are regulations for positioning a flue in relation to windows, doors etc and proximity of other walls. If flue gases could enter your property through an open door/window it suggests a fault. Flue outlet positions are normally detailed in any boiler installation instructions. Otherwise would a...

Re: Advice Needed as Neighbours Want to Join new Extension onto my Existing Extension

If you have built your extension side wall tight to your boundary your neighbour could do the same same and there would be no gap giving the impression of terraced properties even with two independent walls. If their foundations are dug tight to yours I understand a party wall agreement could come i...

Re: Is my Insurance Void With no Boiler Service?

You can easily find out if the the boiler was installed "legitimately" by checking if the installation was notified to the local council as it should be. You may be able to find this information on the council's website. It is now quite normal for insurance companies to attempt to pass the...

Re: Best Paint Product for Painting Worktops?

Good advice in the previous post.
If you do decide to paint you should use a product on a work surface which is suitable for contact with food.

Re: Waste Pipes in Bathroom Discharging onto Garage Roof

Cost will depend on how easy it is to access a foul drainage pipe - are there any other toilets, baths, sinks etc near?
I would ensure the drainage is corrected before purchase because the work would have probably been done right first time if straight forward.

Re: What's the Best Paint Brush Choice?

Firstly for BIN use cheap brushes as shellac is difficult to clean out of a brush. Wrap the brush in cling film or polythene to stop it going hard between uses and don't bother cleaning. Secondly, will all the other paints be water based? If so synthetic brushes are ideal like Fossa Vipers from Deco...

Re: Choice of Kitchen Retailer for new Kitchen in new House?

Some good advice in previous posts. Can I just add that from personal experience "handle less" design doors seem to be a more costly option.
Ikea are good value but are more limited in sizes ( unit widths )
Good luck whatever you choose.

Re: Problem Choosing Architect for 2 Storey Extension

Some very good advice in previous posts especially approaching the council planning department informally to get an idea of what is likely to be acceptable. From the recent experience of two near neighbours it might be beneficial to find a builder you like first and let him recommend an architect. M...

Re: RAL Paint System Explained

RAL is simply a wide range of colours identified by a code so you can order and duplicate the exact match in other makes of paint.
BS4800 is a UK based widely used alternative although there are more obscure others. Many manufacturers, however will match each others colours by name.

Is the escape route needed to satisfy legal requirements or just for your own peace of mind?
If not legally required by regulations it surely does not have to comply.

Re: Door Closes for Fire Regulation and Options for Soft Closers

I have recently had a loft conversion done and was advised fire doors no longer require closers or intumescent strips. Due to installing mains smoke alarms in all habitable rooms I only needed one fire door fitted and that passed building inspection without closer or strips. Seems silly to have fire...

Re: Water Based Wood Paint That Does'nt Peel off With Masking Tape

This could be because the paint has not keyed to the old finish. Are you rubbing down with abrasive paper and degreasing before applying the water based paint. If going over old oil based paint it may be beneficial to coat first with a water based high adhesion primer/undercoat like Bullseye123. I a...
