Re: Opinions of Web Sites Offering Good Tradesmen?

The way I see it and it is just my opinion is this. All these independent sites charge to list a tradesman. If your a busy builder you don't need to pay out for these 3rd party adverts. try asking people who they use, ask for references, go to see previous jobs. Do they have a website with a portfol...

Re: Timber Framed Garden Building Including Bed, Shower and Toilet

Id go bigger personally and add barrier layer, (roofing membrane). say 4x2, osb, 2x2 barrier layer then shiplap. Ive built a lot like this and they retain heat amazingly. Obviously this would cost more. Worst case scenario add the fabric layer before the ship lap on your original plan. Shiplap can s...

Re: Livingroom Floor Joist Strength to Support Aquarium

extra legs a great idea as above or run opposing direction 6x2 joists underneath chocked up on blocks. This would spread the load really well and give a post and beam type load spreading effect. I did both of the above when adding a 250kg concrete island in my kitchen last year. It hasn't fallen thr...

Defo concrete. Really great look and fun to make. Preparation is key. I made my 250KG kitchen island form concrete. Cast it carefully and didnt need to polish, just pop out the cast allow to dry and seal :D

Re: Sourcing Modern 4" x 2" Joists That are not 45mm x 95mm

Im in West Wales but our local saw mill here, Esgair estate, will cut timber to any spec and its no more expensive than buying off the shelf in Travis Perkins or similar. As an eg a 4.8m length of 6x2 is approx £10, thats in Douglas or Larch.

It pays to shop around and play suppliers off each other

Re: Timber Choice for Outdoor Ballustrade?

If you want a good solid wood at an affordable price look at Larch or Douglas fir. I work regularly with the woods you've mentioned and these in outdoor applications and Douglas is super strong and goes a lovely silver colour within around 6 months. We have local saw mills that cut it to order here ...

Re: Removal of Custom Built Desk

I think if it was me Id saw through the middle somewhere and go from there.

Chances are there one screw screw somewhere in the top and you probs will need a little filler afterwards. Much the same with the floor Im guessing.

This wouldnt be a plan to g with if you want to reassemble it of course

Re: shave bottom of door for better fit

If its 3mm Id use the circular saw. Poss without a guide but clamp a piece of 2x1 or similar along the door to run the saw along. Quick sand an hey presto!

Good luck

Oh and remember you can always take more off but its very hard to put it back on!

Most builder centres have a massive selection of these in hard and softwood, it may be worth taking a piece along to try and match. If you fail buy new :D Good luck

Re: Soaked Chipboard and MDF in Loft Conversion

As mentioned above the OSB should be ok, check the end grain for expansion if you can. If its just hit the flat surface it will be fine.

MDF, Hhmmm, maybe get another carpenter to check it for you?

Good luck
