Re: drilling a hole in a bracket

The drill should be fine for this job. When drilling steel make sure you are using a HSS (high speed steel) drill bit, or any other specified for drilling metal. Drill at a low speed and keep the drill bit lubricated with oil (this will make the bit last longer). Hope this helps If possible clamp th...

Re: Flooring over existing hardwood parquet flooring

Just been doing some research about the topic and it seems to depend on the age of your property. if it was built before the 60's it may not have a damp proof membrane (DPM) beneath the slab and this may cause issues. Here's an interesting article m Basically, if you know your house has a DPM, it sh...

Re: Using MDF Instead of Chipboard on Roof?

I don't know how you are using it so it hard to give a definite answer but... Chipboard is preferred as MDF is very sensitive to water. if it gets wet it will blow apart, whereas the resin in chipboard (or OSB oriented strand board) makes it better at resisting water. Ideally if the water proof cove...

Re: Need to Raise the Height of Large Wooden Lintel

Looking at the picture, the timber construction looks more like a window frame than a supporting beam. I would really hope there is a suitable steel or concrete beam above, built into the concrete block work, and the roof is not just resting on those timbers. If there is another beam the frame could...

Re: Do I Need to oil Underside of Oak Worktop?

Personally I have never oiled the underside of a worktop. Partly as you would never be able to reach it. The only way to achieve it would be to put the oil on before fitting the top. However this then creates the problem when silicone is applied as this will not adhere to an oiled surface. I don't t...

Re: Oak Balcony Support Beams Starting to rot

It is hard to tell how bad the rot is from a picture. Can you push a screwdriver deep into the wood? Is it crumbling if you touch it? Major structural supports like this are not things I would advise a DIYer to have a go at replacing, with out some professional guidance. As a solution I would sugges...

Re: Smoothing Very Irregular Ceiling Beams

Without seeing the level of unevenness and knowing the expectation you have for the finish it is hard to answer this accurately, but as a carpenter, this sounds like quite an undertaking! My advice would be to choose a room or beam that looks like it will take the least amount of work to finish and ...

Re: Question About 2 CWS Tanks in Loft

Hi handoverfist, So long as the 2 tanks are connected the water should never rise, in either tank, higher than the over flow. Sounds like a cylinder has been fitted that required a larger volume tank, and instead of buying a new larger tank, they have just tagged a new one to it. If your water syste...

Re: Flooring over existing hardwood parquet flooring

There is nothing wrong with this at all. As long as the parquet is showing no signs of damp and is nice and flat, it should be a perfect substructure to lay a new floor on. You will create a step up into rooms with the new flooring in, due to the extra thickness you are adding to the floor. Any damp...

Re: Suggests to reattach door handle to internal door

This a common problem with these hollow core doors. The handles will usually come with a pair of "door handle through-bolts", that go through both handles and pinch them to the door. The screws should be fitted after just to hold the handle and stop it twisting when opened. You should be a...
