First off not sure what you mean by supply head but you will have to have a mains isolating switch fitted but you can still use existing power whilst the new installation work is being done as long as main earthing is intact. Then have new consumer unit in place and install new circuits and once new ...

If you change your consumer unit then all tests as stated in BS7671 must be carried out as it is considered you have changed the parameters of the existing circuits so the testing is of paramount importance and all results recorded on an electrical installation certificate along with the schedule of...

Most wall lights these days are made of metal anyway so they would need earthing. If the cable as you say has no earth then my advice would be to have a full periodic inspection and test to see if any other cables in the house are the same without earth in them. You haven't said what type of consume...

If you are worried about the ring main I agree with eric why not call in a qualified electrician and have a full preiodic inspection and test done.If all is ok then you will have peace of mind and know all is alright for upto 10 more years but most sparks advise 5 years for a periodic inspection wha...

Why not go and buy a new pull switch and then turn off electric supply and change the switch as shown in the diagram that comes with it and then try it and all should be fine. Before this open up existing pull switch and see if there are any loose connections and if there are then tighten them up tu...

You have not said what type of downlighters you have only some are different sizes to others. As your lamps are proving difficult to remove i assume you have the downlighters with the edison screw fittings. As the lamps are always hard to remove why not change the fittings for more modern ones and t...

In the case you are describing the house should be using only 1 of the two earthing methods you have said exist. In the terms of the tt system under the regulations now and this was pointed out to me at my last annual inspection only 2 months ago that if the supply tails are 16mm squared then the ma...

the wiring regs state if you have 16mm size tails supplying your home then the earth must be equal or if 25 mm tails supply the home then 16mm earth cable must still be used so the minimum size earth you can use is 16mm unless you know how to use the hepatic equation to find out if you can use 10mm ...

By disconnecting the earth cable from the earth rod your house has no earth so the fault has no fault path back to earth .I would strongly recommend you call in a qualified electrician and have a full periodic inspection and test done on your house immediately so the fault can be found and rectified...

After checking out the reg book i have to concur that a separate cpc has to be taken back from the spurred device to the existing socket on the ring. This seems a little extreme however not all sockets have two separate cpc connetions on the back regards Topspark

Both valid points made by ericmark and BLAKEY1963.But if plan of work was conceived after July 1st 2008 then all installation work must be carried out to 17tj edition regulations so this means your upgrade has to be to a 17th edition mains board or a board with a main switch and rcbo's,as you say yo...

First off your friend is right what you are proposing is bad practice and could be dangerous. The second thing is the cables you talk about which i assume were for storage heaters should all be separate circuits and therefore rated at 16 amp so you could not make them into a ring main to feed the ki...
