Removing Pillar Tap Jumper Valve Assembly to Refurbish

Have not found specific reference anywhere on how to remove the jumper valve assembly on a traditional ,rising spindle, pillar tap: the jumper being the part (as I understand it) to which the tap sealing washer is directly fitted - either as a push on/pop on or held in place with a small nut. Web si...

Obo Nails and More on Same - a Salutary Tale

When, several years ago, I complained to my builder about using masonry nails to fix a bio-degradable, grill to the outside wall of may house ( to close off the external vent hole for the internal extractor fan in the kitchen) all I got for my trouble was criticism for being "too fussy". 1...

Std Pillar Tap Washer Hardness and Maintenance

I have been unable to find out how to measure the correct hardness (resilience) for a typical pillar basin/bath tap - there appears to be no easy way to find data or detailed information on this aspect of tap maintenance. I have had issues with dripping taps in my house from new (2004), i.e. all the...

Re: noisy and inefficient wash down WC in 2 year old new build property

A very interesting and well considered reply - thank you for that. No vent from roof and flexy is not kinked, but will look more deeply into blockage possibility and the soil pipe dimension. With any luck problem will get solved....... one way or another. May even end up installing a whole new lavat...

noisy and inefficient wash down WC in 2 year old new build property

Some years ago I bought my present house as a new build - "all mod cons included" i.e. a fully fitted kitchen with appliances, as part of the developer's sales pitch. The 3/4 bed det. house enjoys the benefit of three {wash-down] WC's: one each for the en-suite, the family bathroom and the...

UPvC opening window in cloak room vs contents insurance

Have recently discovered that my ground floor cloaks/WC on my late 2004 built 4 bed det. house, which has no mechanical means of ventilation, i.e. an extractor fan, poses a security risk - as far as my home insurance is concerned. The only means of purging, that is, changing the air quickly, is by o...

How to Adjust Screw in and Lift off Hinges of External Security Door

All the external security doors on my property are equipped with heavy duty, lift off hinges (no screw plates). Heavier versions than even those offered by ANUBA who offer heavy duty at 9mm dia barrel 36mm long. Mine are 15mm dia barrel 50mm long. Not listed by Anuba. One of the doors - the most fre...

Cold Empty Roof Space with Central Heating and HW Pipes Exposed

In August 2014 DIY Noob asked about REPLACING scattered foam sleeving around the COPPER pipes in the loft of the (main) house. The response was helpful........ up to a point. I recently moved into a modern (12 year old) detached house with a semi detached single garage, which has a pitched roof. I h...

Tight Bristan 1901 Basin Pillar Taps

Have 6, identical, model 1901 Bristan basin taps - 3 per 'wet' room all of which are as fitted in the property, when I bought it new, 10 years ago. From day one I have never been entirely happy with these taps, but attempts by the developer's contractors to remedy matters saw the taps eventually bec...

Problem Radiator - Cannot Get Bleed Screw Open

I have similar problem to another member - rad hot at top, coldish at bottom. Bleeding is the first thing to do. Broke two keys trying to free the bleed screws. What do I do now? By the way the square heads are on the inner face of the double rad so even if I remove the rad I still cannot get to the...

Double Glazing - Install New Glazing into Integral Garage

A surf of the x2 glazing section failed to cover my issue. I wish to make an opening in the outer garage wall of my relatively new build, timber framed, brick skinned, house (10 years old) so I can have natural light coming into my integral garage via a x2 glazed UPVC window. At this time I have to ...

expansion gaps in concrete paths

Around part of the perimeter of my house is a 900mm wide 'L' shaped concrete slab pathway: it extends along the entire length of the gable end and around the 90 deg corner to about half the length of the house, measured from the gable end, finishing at the paved patio immediately adjacent patio door...

Re: plumbing regulations

hello Dave from Leeds and 'Plumbob' Many thanks for that - am relieved to hear that "we" (that is the UK) has 'at last' come to its senses. For the record my 'new' (downsized) house was built Nov 2004 - not exactly a 1000 years ago and certainly my German experience predates this build by ...

plumbing regulations

Apologies if this is deemed irrelevant. As a DIYer for over 50 years and now retired - and still "at it"! - I never cease to amaze how backward in some respects are the regulations in Britain vis-a-vis Germany where I lived and worked between 1998 and 2003. I "curse" every time i...

draining complete CH system

Have noted the post re "draining an open vented system", which unfortunately wasn't right for my situation. I "own" a detached 7-yearold 4-bed property on a medium sized, fairly 'upmarket', modern development so would have expected at least similar standard of plumbing etc etc to...
