Replacement cast iron bath?

I am renovating a bathroom in my daughter's flat. I intend fitting an over bath shower but am uncertain about whether it would be better to 1. Replace the cast iron bath with an acrylic one with appropriate taps 2. Renovate the cast iron bath and fit appropriate taps. The reason for my indecision is...

Electric shower or combi-based version

Many thanks to you both for your prompt replies.

I shall look into a thermostatic shower unit and abandon the electric shower.

Electric shower or combi-based version

Hi

My daughter has just bought a flat. The bathroom requires some work including a choice between a shower based on water supplied by the combi central heating boiler or using an existing electric shower. Which option would you suggest for (a) economy or (b) effectiveness?

Kitchen extension and conservatory removal

Many thanks for your rapid reply. I thought that removal was the answer but was hoping that it might not be required. Ah well another cost to factor in.

Thanks again

Plumbing services supply to island unit

Hi I am in the process of planning a kitchen extension and would like to install an island unit which contains the sink and a dishwasher. If the floor is concrete what is the best way to get services (water, waste and electricity) across to the island. Do I need to bury a plastic service pipe throug...

Kitchen extension and conservatory removal

Hi I am considering removing my existing conservatory and replacing it with an extension to my kitchen. The conservatory has a concrete floor which does not have insulation under it. Will all the concrete have to be removed to enable insulation to be fitted under the new extension floor? If so how d...

Soldering with lead-free solder

It is a long time since I installed my central heating plumbing and since then lead-free solder has become the norm. I now want to add an extra radiator. What type of torch do I need to use lead-free solder satisfactorily?

Cheers

Old loft conversion

Hi I too have an old loft conversion in my house which was built in the 1880's. Estimated date of construction of the loft is the 1920's. However, when I recently investigated my options for updating the staircase I was told by Building Control that if I updated the staircase everything else in the ...

Yet another joist question

Hi In my Victorian house all of the ceilings, which are lath and plaster are attached to joists which also support the floor above and all the ceilings are in good condition after over 100years - draw your own conclusions. As to the size of joist required you will be able to get info from a table re...

Boiler header tank

Hi Many thanks to Carl83 for the reply. However, my concern was focussed on the extent to which expansion of the water in the system when hot would cause an overflow into the header tank with the potential for siphonage rather than the pressure as such. The pressure is a factor which I had not consi...

Government grants for new boilers

Hi

There are a number of schemes offering help with the purchase of boilers but most are aimed at either older people in receipt of benefits. However, you can get info at the Energy Saving Trust website Google "energysavingtrust.org.uk/"

Hope that helps

Boiler header tank

Hi,

Is there a rule of thumb for calculating the vertical distance between the boiler and the expansion/feed tank in a vented twin pipe central heating system?

Cheers

Guys

Thanks to both for your replies. I have now decided just to have the job done by professionals. I shall stick to minor plumbing jobs!

Lead pipe sizes

Hi I am looking to buy compression fittings that will attach to a lead pipe but am a bit foxed by the sizes. For lead, pipe size is given by the weight of one foot length of the pipe. However, because the pipe is connected I cannot just hack a bit off and weigh it! Does anyone know the approximate e...

Turning off hot water supply

Hi I am doing some work on my daughter's house which requires the hot and cold water to be turned off so that I can fit isolating valves for the taps on the kitchen sink. The cold water stopcock is easily accessed but there doesn't seem to be any easy access for the hot water. Recently a combi boile...
