the type desctibed by KB is the most common. It's not unknow for people to lose the ring and glue the bulb in! other possibility is that the bulb is held in by a retaining ring which is flush fitting (it becomes the faceplate of the light), these can become very stiff with time. look to see if the b...

The other possibility is you've lost a neutral somewhere and the earth is now providing your neutral return path. This should trip the switch, but I have seen it when it doesn't. It could be an earth neutral reversal somewhere.

the lighting circuit is a radial circuit so lights will work as far as the fault, in you case the light you are working on. After that nothing will work. There should be another red cable that loops out to the rest of your lights. this needs putting with the red cable you have which is your live fee...

If the cable is buried in the wall (rther than in conduit or behind a stud wall) then it can be repaired, although as above this isn't ideal, as the repair can fail over time. on any circuit the weak link is joints. Really this should be done by an electrician to ensure it is done correctly. It's qu...

mate, you've got issues!!
time to get a spark in I'm afraid. also that grey doesn't meet the regs if it's a single with only single insulation along it's length. sounds like you've got a major bodge on your hands there.

reason your light is on all the time is because you've connected the live on the lamp to the permanent live feed (the reds) you need to connect to the switch wire, follow the directions above. the only proviso to this is that if the new fitting is an eddison screw you must identify the switch live a...

you can't take a 2nd spur off the single socket direct. the only way to do it would be you spur off to a fused connection unit and then spur from that. Also any cables you bury in the walls must ne RCD protected. your boiler cable is flex and could be chased in, although this is a slightly unconvven...

your boib to need to remove the switch plates then buzz these wires out with a continuity tester to try and work out what feeds what. I think I can see what is happening with the cables you have (This is probably the last light on the lighting radial circuit) which explains why you don't have too ma...

with regard to downlighters, you can now get some nice ones that take energy saving bulbs or you could use LEDs. you'll need more of them as the spread of light is much less, but they use a great deal less energy and are virtually maintainance free.

this is where the new regs become a bit of a pain. if you want to move the lightswitch and new cabling is laid into the wall in chases you will have to RCD protect it, unless some fairly detailed requirements are met, so suddenly the simple matter of moving a light switch becomes a much bigger job. ...

It is very common on conservatories to run the wiring as a fused spur from the ring main. this is your easiest option. If you are only going to have 2 sockets that shouldn't be a problem. Use an RCD fused spur, available for about £25. from this you take a feed to your light, which will need to be in...

sorry, I thought when you were talking about 20 amp unit you were going to hard wire them rather than using plugs, my mistake. however, the idea of using a fused spur is to stop the spur being overloaded, if it keeps blowing the answer is not to, in effect, increase the size of the fuse by fitting a...
