yes it does, and this is also notifiable under part p so needs to be done by someone registered on the appropriate scheme, or notified to building control BEFORE work starts

2.4kw is ok on a plug. my understanding is, amps not withstanding, if the cooker is freestanding it can run run off a plug, which must be accessable away from the cooker in the event, say, of a chip pan fire.if it is built in it has to be hardwired with suitable isolation

if it is switched from the ceiling rose you should have a live coming in and a live going out to the switch. if you only have one it sounds like the switching is done elswhere, possibly behind the switch itself or in the roof void.

thanks sparx, appologies for going off topic a bit, an interesting insight. when working on your own it can be difficult to get the opinions of others so you go down a path that may not be the right one sometimes.

you need to speak to an electrician first. As you appear to be aware this is notifiable under part P, but very few electricians will sign of work that they haven't done, and you need to ensure it meets his requirements so he will sign it off rather than tell you to pull it all out and start again!

no, you need an earth at the fitting which can be tracewd back to the distribution board. did you manage to pull any more cable out from the ceiling? take off the exisitng fitting (presumably a pendent) you should find a hole behind it and there may be some more cable stuffed up there. If there is, ...

it is better to share the load more or less equally, also if you run an RCD consistently at more than it'srating you will eventuallycause it to fail prematurely, but I think thats unlikely in this case. Sparx, et al with regard to diversity can you help me out, I noticed on one of your other posts y...

it depends what circuits they are supplying. when designing circuits you are allowed to apply something called diversity. this allows for the fact that not everything will be running at the same time. of more concern is that you only have one RCD by the sounds of it. If this board was fitted after J...

gotta find an earth I'm afraid. if you are able to pull a bit of spare cable through you may find the earth has been cut off inside the outer insulation and you can trim it back. if not, your stuffed!!
one other question, the cables that are there, are they twin and earth or singles?
