Maybe a silly question but is the ignition (electrics) connected as on some models, the gas safety valve will not activate unless there is an ignition.

These type of properties used to be fitted with an open vent so you should be able to find a suitable replacement that also works as a shut off.

When the building extraction system is running then the vent will open and when it is off, it will close automatically due to no draw.

Down to preference really but I for one am not keep on seeing piping or cabling on the exterior of buildings. There are also the winter months to think about where frost can get at it. If you feel that your best option is from the kitchen then maybe you could have a look at using plastic pipe and tr...

Depending on the age of the building and type of plaster, you could use a breathable membrane, battens then foiled back plaster board. Maybe worth seeking advice from a builder etc prior to starting.

As recommended, I would seek the advice of a builder and one who has been in the trade for some time as if you are referring to the slab being at the top of the fireplace and within the chimney breast, this would have been cast on site into the internal brickwork and would contain the clay flu pipe....

Hi Elizabeth,

The wall needs to breath so it would be the DPM first or coat the wall with a breatherable sealer.

You can then insulate then use the polythene or foiled backed plasterboard.

Not something I have ever tried personally but on first thoughts, due to the finish on the tiles, the adhesive would not bond. If it were something that I would attempt, I would personally use the coving adhesive on the ceiling edge and try a bonding agent such as 'no nails' on the tiled edge. If yo...

The only thing I would add is cross bracing in between the new joists to help prevent movement and fixings to the original joists to help prevent sagging.

Although sand blasting may be an option, care should be taken prior to any work be carried out. Chances are that the stonework was originally painted due to the stone becoming discoloured from the weathering effect and as such, the weathering effect could have also changed the stones density. As men...

As you will now be aware, sandstone is very absorbent so care should be taken when attempting to remove stains as more damage can be done than harm. There are many products out there on the market however choosing the correct one can be an art in itself. We are in the business of carrying out such w...

There are a few solutions you can look at but the answer depends on why there are gaps in the first place. If the bath is touching the walls in places then the walls must be out of true. If not then look at what is preventing the bath from going right back to the walls. Maybe the bath supports under...

Trial and error so the first port of call would be to find which tap it is coming from i.e hot or cold. If it is only the bathroom tap then chances are it will be the tap at the end of the water feed so your question then is, what is in between that tap and the one on the feed before. Is it a new in...
