Chage in Bathroom Zone Regs

Hi, with the 'harmonizing' and alingnment with our European brethrend ethos, the 17th Edition Regs now dispenses with Zone 3 restrictions in bathrooms and even allows for socket outlets to be fitted (subject to distance from Zone 1) Based on this, is it permissible within the regs to now fit a 3 pol...

Hi Tom Tom. I'm no expert but having just read through the guide to 17th edition wiring regs (personal Research), they do make referance to the types of beakers used in domestic lighting. For type B C/B is calls for 10A, for type C it calls for 6A & for Cartridge Fuse it calls for 5A, this is on...

Damp problem

Hi. The first thing to establish is what is causing the problem, as you could be spending money unnecessarily. Fixing the down pipe, irrespective of where it's situated should be done, as is serves a purpose and it could also be contributing to the problem, although if opening a window and heating o...

Hi. Don't block off the vents, these are necessary to create and air flow beneath the floor which helps prevent the build of excessive moisture. Your options here are to either place insulation between the joists beneath the floorboards, using polystyrene 2" or 4" or Fiberglass bats, held ...

Warping Laminate

Hi, was the Laminate laid on a concrete or wood floor? I ask this as if it was laid on a concrete floor, without a Damp Proof Membrane under it , excessive moisture posibly rising from the concrete floor could be the problem, swelling the laminate and causing it to curl. Also, if the expansion gap a...

Painting in the cold

Hi, generaly speaking you should avoid painting outside surfaces this time of year as the paint can take an extended length of time to cure due to the time taken to evaporate the solvents in the paint and with the likelyhood of frosts, this can cause the structure of the paint to be affected before ...

Hi, I take it that the tape you refer to is the one that links the slats together and also fixes the spacing of them when positioned? If so this should go at the bottom (toward the floor) If the bed is self-assembly, try loosening the fixings which may give you a bit of play on the width that allows...

Door Warping

Hi, door warping is a tricky one, not the cause, but the solution. I take it that the frames are plumb and this is not what is exasherbating the problem? If the frames are plumb, you can try forcing the door in the opposite direction and fixing it there for a while to counteract the warp, but this r...

Noise reduction

Hi, I'm not convinced that laying MDF would be a solution, this could be a lot of work in cutting and trimming and presumebly, you would still be laying carpet with and underlay on this, furthing increasing the cost with no guraentee of reducing the noise signaficantly. I would opt for a dense crumb...

Papering on new Plaster

Hi, new plaster can be quite thirsty, so it is probably worth 'sizing' the walls with a weak wallpaper mix first and letting this dry off for a while, this will help when papering by not drawing too much moisture out of the pasted paper and allow easy 'sliding' of the paper to align it up. There are...

Hi, I would always recommend the right product for any particular application, but then wouldn't anyone. Bathroom laminates are made using water resistant bonding agents in the manufacture, so are inherently resistant, but like with any project, you can chance your luck and may never have a problem....

Laminate in Bathrooms

Hi, I would be wary about laying Laminate flooring in a Bathroom due to the 'water' issue. There are specific ranges of laminate flooring designed for use in kitchens and bathrooms, but even these will have severe restrictions attached to them to ensure they are not affected by spilled water. Most l...

Threshold Strip for Laminate

Hi, you will need to obtain a reducing strip (teardrop profile) to provide a step-down of the differing heights between the Laminate and lino at the door threshold. The type and height of this will depend on the depth of the finished laminate (depending on the type of underlay used under the Laminat...

Hotpoint Aquarious

Hi, I had a Hotpoint Aquarius Washer and that became noisey, turned out to be the motor, so maybe worth looking there. Also, mine stopped intermittantly, this was because of a build up of carbon on the Commutator in the motor from the brushes. Remove the brushes (can be abit tricky on one side of th...

Hi, it may be worth going round the rads and bleeding them, this can sometimes be the cause of pressure build up in the system due to the reaction of the water on the metals in the system, but be aware of how to top up the pressure at the boiler before doing this because if the presure drops below a...
